This course finishes the review of introductory physics with a discussion of geometrical and physical optics followed by the subjects of 'modern' physics; e.g. the physics of the 20th century. The topics covered include special relativity, atomic physics, nuclear physics, solid state physics and elementary particle physics.

The development of concepts in this course will follow the historical path taken during the 20th century as quantum mechanics was developed. The lectures will also include discussions of the historical context within which the concepts of modern physics were developed.

Prerequisites: Calculus (Math 202 Phys 211, Phys 212).

Required Texts:

  1. Bauer & Westfall, or the equivalent, for example, Halliday, Resnick & Walker
  2. Krane, K, Modern Physics, Wiley
  3. Preston, D., Before the Fall-Out, Walker
