Spring 2012
- Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Spring 2012, Climate Variability and Change in Alaska, class 1 notes, class 2 notes, class 3 notes and class 4 notes.
SC4 Session I: Feb 27; Mar 5, 12, 19
Mondays 1:00 - 2:15 pm
Climate in Alaska is very complicated - and therefore very interesting! Alaska is surrounded on three sides by oceans that are covered with seasonal sea ice, and it has diverse topography. It is extensive in the north-south direction so has very different climate in the southern versus northern extremes. Parts of Alaska are desert while other parts are rain forests. Gain a basic understanding of climate variability and change as well as how weather and climate are linked. Learn about active areas of research conducted at UAF that further our understanding of climate and its link to other parts of the earth system, e.g. vegetation, glaciers, and rivers. Discuss the climate changes that have been documented in Alaska as well as future projections.
Instructor Uma Bhatt is an Associate Professor of Atmospheric Sciences in the UAF College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Her teaching and research specialties include climate variability and change using both long term observations and climate models.
